Roxana Esmailji heads up Barcelona Collective. Her objective is to build each collection so that each shoe can tackle running between morning drop-offs, meetings, after-work events and travel, all with a sense of wit and style. After studying & working in design in Milan & Venice, Roxana moved back to Canada with the objective of building a footwear brand that paid homage to her family’s business in Barcelona, where life is fast-paced and colourful. She studied footwear design & production under Natalio Martin, master-shoemaker in Barcelona before setting out to build her first collection.
Roxana’s great great aunt Benedetta was Picasso’s muse, starting a tailoring business in bohemian, turn-of-the-century Barcelona. She had a great sense of style & understood her customers because, like her, they were multi-faceted and developing their own sense of independence at a time when women were gaining ground in Barcelona and making larger purchasing decisions on their own. Benedetta’s portrait by the Master shows a quiet determination and great elegance. An elegance that was passed on to Roxana's grandmother who was a furrier in Barcelona – not an easy environment for a woman a 100 years ago. Business flourished under the family’s matriarchs, thanks to their thoughtful perseverance to make beautiful and pragmatic designs. Colours and designs in our collection pay homage to the art, colours and architecture of Barcelona.
