Barcelona Collective

BARCELONA COLLECTIVE is inspired by the bold form and colour of Barcelona’s architecture. We won on their loyal following by making fashion-forward shoes that are comfortable to a fault. Our shoes are 30% lighter than most traditional footwear, thanks to shock-absorbing soles that are also cushioned with memory foam. The unique aesthetic mixes a sporty upper with a sexy silhouette, a distinctive look that works as well in the boardroom as at a boardwalk cafe. On-trend colours and fabrics & a variety of heel heights appeal to independent women who are looking for style that fits with their on-the-go lifestyle. Pursuingexquisite quality that guarantees comfort, Barcelona Collective makes its full collection by hand in North America. By combining traditional craftsmanship with innovative materials, Barcelona shoes are even machine-washable.  We create footwear and accessories that celebrate intelligent design. Our shoes are flattering and fun to wear everywhere – work, play, travel.

Our Roots:

Roxana Esmailji heads up Barcelona Collective. Her objective is to build each collection so that each shoe can tackle running between morning drop-offs, meetings, after-work events and travel, all with a sense of wit and style. After studying & working in design in Milan & Venice, Roxana moved back to Canada with the objective of building a footwear brand that paid homage to her family’s business in Barcelona, where life is fast-paced and colourful. She studied footwear design & production under Natalio Martin, master-shoemaker in Barcelona before setting out to build her first collection.

Family History:

Roxana’s great great aunt Benedetta was Picasso’s muse, starting a tailoring business in bohemian, turn-of-the-century Barcelona. She had a great sense of style & understood her customers because, like her, they were multi-faceted and developing their own sense of independence at a time when women were gaining ground in Barcelona and making larger purchasing decisions on their own. Benedetta’s portrait by the Master shows a quiet determination and great elegance.  An elegance that was passed on to Roxana's grandmother who was a furrier in Barcelona – not an easy environment for a woman a 100 years ago. Business flourished under the family’s matriarchs, thanks to their thoughtful perseverance to make beautiful and pragmatic designs. Colours and designs in our collection pay homage to the art, colours and architecture of Barcelona.
